Chinese car company, BYD has already been selling cars under its own main brand in the UK since 2023 with the Seal, Atto 3 and Dolphin. However, BYD does have some brands underneath it, with the likes of Denza, Yangwang and now, Fangchengbao. Fangchengbao is a very new brand, only being launched in 2023 at the Chengdu motor show and mainly specialises in SUVs, with models named Bao 3, Bao 5 and Bao 8 - handily named in size order.
Speaking to Autocar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week, vice president of BYD Stella Li said that Fangchengbao will sell cars in the UK. She said that BYD predicts Fangchengbao to be very popular in the UK, thanks to the sales success of large SUVs here. Up until now, this is a market BYD has been absent from, the only model being the Atto 3 which is a crossover.
The Bao 5 will be the model most likely to come to the UK first. In terms of size, it's around the same dimensions as the Land Rover Defender 110 and has been positioned as a premium off-roader. This model isn't EV unfortunately, but hybrid instead. It uses a 1.5-litre turbo-charged engine with two electric motors. In total, it makes 677bhp.
The battery, like in the Yangwang U8 is sourced from parent company BYD and uses its super safe, blade design which also helps form part of the vehicle structure. Here it is 31.8kWh and can run the car in EV only mode for up to 78 miles.
The entry-level Bao 3 is thankfully a full EV, which will rival the Ford Explorer and Skoda Enyaq. It has 317 miles of range and either 146bhp or 292bhp.
Meanwhile the larger Bao 8 is four tonnes and is about the same size as the Defender 130. It also uses the same Disus-P hydraulic suspension system as the Yangwang U8 and U9.
