Hyundai launches updated Ioniq 5 with larger batteries and cheaper prices

Hyundai has today launched a new updated version of its popular Ioniq 5 SUV, which now starts at a lower price tag but also comes with larger batteries as standard. The entry level model now starts at £39,900 for the smaller battery pack, a £3,455 price cut from the outgoing version. Battery sizes are now 63kWh and 84kWh, an upgrade over the 58kWh and 73kWh packs previously offered. The smaller of the two now gives you 273 miles of range and the larger, 354 miles of range.

Generally in our testing, cars from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis have exceptional efficiency and are very accurate when it comes to range, sometimes underestimating itself - so the range here is likely to be what you get.

Other improvments include the addition of a rear wiper, something the Ioniq 5 has not had before and was a common complaint amongst owners in the UK. The Ioniq 5 N, which was launched recently was given a rear wiper. Elsewhere, changes have been made to the chassis with a more rigid cowl crossbar, which Hyundai says will reduce vibration in the steering column. Also, more effort has been put into the sound insulation, so the ride should be more refined.

Not that it is that obvious, but some minor styling changes have been made to the front end. A new open grille section has been added to the front, which does actually add 20mm to the length of the car.

Inside, some minor changes have been made to the climate control panel to make it a bit easier to use.

Prices for the new updated Hyundai Ioniq 5 now start at a lower £39,900 for the 63kWh battery in Advance trim. For this you do get a heat pump. The larger 83kWh pack does add £3,500. Hyundai has also added a new sporty N-Line trim, which adds a more aggressive front bumper and larger 20-inch alloy wheels.
