Mazda switches to use NACS in Japan

Many EV manufacturers in the US have been adopting the Tesla NACS connector over the past few years, in fact there are now more companies using it than not. However, this has long been a US only thing and it was looking quite unlikely that countries outside of the US would adopt it.

However, Mazda has recently announced that from 2027, its new electric models that are sold in Japan will use the NACS connector. This makes sense, as for a very long time, Tesla's sold in Japan have used the NACS connector. This new agreement will mean Mazda customers will have access to Tesla Superchargers in Japan without the need for adapters.

In its brief press release, Mazda said the following:

"Mazda adopted NACS to provide customers with greater convenience by a broader range of charging options. This will provide Mazda BEV customers with access to Tesla Superchargers across Japan. Mazda BEVs will be compatible with other charging standards besides NACS with the use of adapters."

Back in November 2022, Tesla announced that it was making the NACS connect open source and since then, many brands in the US have adopted it, such as Hyundai, Ford, BMW and many more. Adopting NACS means that non-Tesla EVs can easily use the Supercharger network in the US, without the need for adaptors.
