Toyota launches new entry level version of the GR Supra in the UK

This week, Toyota has introduced a new less expensive version of the Toyota Supra, with a smaller engine and over £7,000 cheaper. The new entry level GR Supra now has a 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine from BMW, producing 254bhp and its now on sale in the UK.

The standard Supra has a 3.0-litre straight six from BMW producing 335bhp and like that engine the new 2.0 version is also from BMW and producing around 80bhp less than the original car. This doesn’t seem to have affected the performance that much, only 0.8 seconds slower from 0-60mph and both cars top out at 155mph, although electronically limited.

There are some other benefits to the smaller engine, and one of them is its actual physical size, the 2.0 litre is smaller and lighter than the 3.0 litre engine, therefore saving 100kg and Toyota have managed to move the engine further back in the car for a 50/50 weight distribution.

“To achieve agile steering and stable cornering, we worked very hard to reduce the new car’s weight, while aiming for a 50/50 weight balance. This presented us with huge challenges, but we did not want to compromise on our targets.”

Tetsuya Tada – Supra Chief Engineer

The new 2.0 litre Toyota Supra can be ordered now, from £45,995. First customer deliveries will be later this month.
