Uber and BYD partner up to offer discounted EVs to drivers

Uber wants to make its entire fleet electric only in London, by the end of 2025. To help get its drivers in the seat of EVs, BYD and Uber have decided to partner up and make it cheaper to purchase an EV from the company. BYD is planning on offering 100,000 EVs to Uber drivers in a lot of markets, not just London - which include Europe, Latin America, Australia, Canada, Middle East and New Zealand.

Both BYD and Uber have acknolged that the purchase price of an EV might be a sticking point, and the two companies said that drivers have raised this as an issue as well as the availability of any finance deals. These reasons alone have prevented some drivers to move to an EV. Both companies also mentioned that something could be done surrounding discounted charging as well as some incentives around maintenance and insurance.

Back in May 2024, Uber announced that it would give £5,000 off the price of an EV, regardless if it was new or used. One Kia dealer in London has a deal with Uber where drivers can get £17,000 of the price of an EV6 or £13,000 off the price of a Niro EV.
