Ubiquiti launches new UMR-Industrial, an outdoor rated 4G device

The last few days have been pretty Ubiquti heavy in news, with the most recent episode of our Ubiquiti podcast published last week we mentioned that it has been a quieter month for the company. However in the last few days we have seen the new UXG Enterprise, EFG and now the UMR Industrial. This new device follows on from the first UMR that Ubiquiti released and is the second device in the UniFi Mobility product line. These devices are generally designed for fleet management first and foremost but it seems Ubiquiti is taking a different route with the new UMR Industrial.

Ubiquiti shared a short YouTube video earlier today which highlighted some of the use cases for this new device, one being an all in one solution for a remote camera. As the UMR devices now support WireGuard and site-to-site VPN back to a UDM, it was suggested that it could be used for a camera, as the UMR has support for PoE output on one of its Ethernet ports. The UMR would then connect back to a network where there is a UniFi Protect device running. This kind of thing would obviously rack up a lot of data usage, so it is good that Ubiquiti has now made the UMR Industrial fully unlocked worldwide, even in the US where Ubiquiti's obsession with AT&T has seen some criticism.

The new UMR-Industrial is essentially the same as the UMR, but in a different box. It has support for LTE Cat 4 still and WiFi 4 on its access point with 2.4GHz only. However, considering this could be used for a remote camera or access point, the WiFi speeds aren't too bad. However, the issue is the LTE modem, which hasn't been upgraded with a max of 150mbps down and 50mbps up, on paper.

The UMR devices do have an optional cloud subscription, for $2/month or $19/year per each device. This provides remote access to each one via mobility.ui.com and they cannot be adopted to the UniFi Network Application. Ubiquiti says that local access via the UMR GUI is always supported.

The new UMR Industrial is on sale now in the US for $199, the UK for £190.80, although it is marked as "coming soon" and in the EU for €220.80 and it is in stock.
