UK government has extended the consultation period for the combustion engine ban

UK government has extended the consultation period for the combustion engine ban

The UK government has an ongoing plan to have zero carbon emissions by 2050, other countries have this ambition or similar in mind and to help get there, the original plan was to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel powered cars by 2040 and there is an ongoing decision to bring this forward to 2035 – or even earlier to help speed up the transition to electric vehicles.

This plan was announced by Prime Minister, Boris Johnson in February this year. The ban is going to include all vehicles, including cars and vans which do not have complete zero emissions, which means hybrids and plug-in hybrids will be banned too.

Understandably, there is an ongoing consultation process for this decision which is public. The original date was the end of May, but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this has now been extended to the 31st July 2020.

The UK government is taking feedback on gov.uk. The government is interetsed in any feedback about the phase out date and among other things the impact it will have on different sectors.
