Volkswagen reduces its EV production

Volkswagen has announced that it is going to be temporally scaling back EV production at its Emden plant in Lower Saxony, Germany. This is due to a quoted “strong customer reluctance” to EVs and the demand for them is 30% below that of what they are making.

In response, Volkswagen is going to be canceling a shift at the factory for the next two weeks, ahead of a four week holiday period for employees who work on the electric car lines. This will be affecting the ID.4 and the new ID.7. However, production of the ICE Passat will remain as it was.

“The registration numbers of electric vehicles continue to be high, but what concerns us is the current dip in demand – not only at Volkswagen but across all manufacturers.”

Olaf Lies, Minister of economic affairs for the state of Lower Saxony

Manfred Wulff, head of the works council for the Emden plant spoke to a German newspaper and said: “We are experiencing strong customer reluctance in the electric vehicle sector.” He also mentioned that production of the ID.7 was supposed to start in July, but has now been pushed back to “later this year.”
