Another day, more news about the Volkswagen scandal. Earlier today the German car company revealed that around 800,000 cars in Europe are affected by the emissions scandal. Many of the cars are diesel but also as of today we learnt that some petrol cars from VW, Skoda, Audi and Seat are also affected if they have a 1.4, 1.6 or 2.0 litre engine.

VW stated:

“Under the ongoing review of all processes and workflows in connection with diesel engines it was established that the CO2 levels and thus the fuel consumption figures for some models were set too low during the CO2 certification process. The majority of the vehicles concerned have diesel engines.”

As mentioned, cars made by the other companies in the VW group such as Audi, Seat and Skoda are affected, however cars only with small engines. BlueMotion engines are also affected by this. Yesterday we reported that more cars were affected by the scandal, this included the Porsche Cayenne which uses the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, also the VW Touareg, Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, Audi A8L and Audi Q5.

This news came from the America Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which broke the news that the Volkswagen Group has used the defeat device on the 3.0-litre V6 engine, which is widely used on many cars. Around 10,000 cars in the United States have been affected.

“VW has once again failed its obligation to comply with the law that protects clean air for all Americans,” said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for the Office for EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. “All companies should be playing by the same rules. EPA, with our state, and federal partners, will continue to investigate these serious matters, to secure the benefits of the Clean Air Act, ensure a level playing field for responsible businesses, and to ensure consumers get the environmental performance they expect.”

As in the report from yesterday, Porsche have come out and stated that they are surprised to learn the news.

“We are surprised to learn this information. Until this notice, all of our information was that the Porsche Cayenne Diesel is fully compliant. Porsche Cars North America will cooperate fully with all relevant authorities.”

This scandal has cost VW billions, the company has set aside around £4.7bn to cover all costs for the issue.
