WWDC 2021 is later today, here is what to expect

WWDC 2021 is later today and Apple is expected to unveil new versions of its operating systems, with iOS 15, watchOS 8, iPadOS 15 and macOS 12. As well as updates to tvOS and probably, the HomePod.

As it was last year, WWDC is all online again due to the current pandemic and the social distancing implications. Apple’s efforts last year were well received and the keynote will be a pre-recorded mini film as it was last year. The keynote will be live on Apple’s YouTube channel at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST. If you can’t watch the event live, we will be providing details as it unfolds via Twitter. Follow our @aandt_live account as we’ll be live tweeting the event.

iOS 15

There isn’t much information surrounding specifics for the next version of iOS, just a report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg suggesting that Apple could provide some updates to how notifications are managed. Notifications could have new categories with “working, sleeping, or custom categories.”

iPadOS 15

The future of iPadOS is a bit hazy at what Apple could do, the new iPad Pro was given a new lease of life with the M1 chip from the latest Mac models, with 50% more power than the outgoing models. But this power is yet to be untapped, rumorrs are suggesting that Apple could be working on bringing some of its professional apps to the iPad, whether that be Xcode or Final Cuts Pro X, remains to be seen.

New hardware

Apple is also rumoured to be updating the rest of the MacBook Pro line with Apple Silicon. WWDC is generally focused on new software and developer tools, but Apple has announced hardware at this event before. The Retina MacBook Pro in 2012 was announced at WWDC, as was the Mac Pro in 2019 and the iMac Pro a few years before.

A new MacBook Pro has been confirmed to be coming later today by Apple leaker Jon Prosser. It is set to have a new design, more ports, such as the return of MagSafe as well as a HDMI port and an SD card slot.
