BYD has been selling its smallest car, the Seagull in China since the end of April 2023 for the equivalent of £8,000. BYD UK is “keen to have it” when asked about the possibly of bringing the car to the UK market. In the lineup, it would sit below the Dolphin, the smallest car that the company currently sells in the UK. In some other markets, the Seagull is sold as the Dolphin Mini.

In terms of range, it launched with 30kWh and 38kWh battery packs. The 30kWh will be good for 190 miles of range and the 38kWh with 252 miles.

For the UK market, the BYD team doesn’t actually have any sales targets, it seems to be set on making a name for itself with high quality, well priced EVs that are made universally accessible. The company has sold a record number of new EVs and hybrid vehicles recently, with a huge growth in its home of China. The company also has plans to grow from 21 to 60 dealers in the UK by the summer, with a broad coverage of the country, including England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

So far, since launching just one year ago in the UK, BYD has three cars on sale with the BYD Atto 3, BYD Dolphin and the new, BYD Seal wit the latter taking on the Tesla Model 3 head on. BYD also has a luxury arm, which produces the Yangwang U8 SUV and the possibility of bringing this to the UK is being evaluated.
