Dark Sky, the popular weather app has been acquired by Apple

This week, the popular app for real-time weather alerts, Dark Sky has been acquired by Apple for an undisclosed sum. Dark Sky has long been known for its ultra accurate rain alerts and weather predictions. Apple has been quick to make the transition to being under Apple, on the same day as the announcement (31st March) the developer of the app moved to Apple and the Android app has been pulled from the Google Play Store.

Dark Sky has said that the iOS will continue to be in the Apple App Store to purchase, but by the 1st July 2020, the Android app and the Wear OS app will be shut down. Dark Sky has also said that users who have active subscription, will get a refund after the app goes away.

“Today we have some important and exciting news to share: Dark Sky has joined Apple. Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy.”

Something lesser known, is that Dark Sky has a website which is a nice way of viewing the weather radar maps, the website will remain active up until 1st July 2020 however, after that date the website will go offline but it will still support some APIs.

Who knows what will happen to Dark Sky, but it seems more likely that Apple is looking to offer a better service through its own default Weather app for iOS users. Currently, weather data from The Weather Channel is used.
