Ford has revealed some more information about the upcoming Ranger PHEV, the first plug-in hybrid pick-up truck to be offered in Europe.
Ford initially announced the new truck last year, but some information such as the electric motor size, total power output, battery size and also a full rundown of alll the various driving modes were not previously shared.
Ford officially revealed the new Ford Ranger PHEV in person at the recent IAA commercial vehicle show in Hanover, Germany. This new truck, as mentioned last year has 27-miles of EV only range, but we now know the battery size., at 11.8kWh. The engine used here is a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and all together as a package, it makes 275bhp and a whopping 690Nm of torque.
Ford also has a wide array of driving modes too, with Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later and EV Charge. The Ranger PHEV can also utilise its high voltage battery to power tools and equipment when at a job site. This is called Pro Power Onboard and it has been seen in some of the company's pure EV models. This removed the need for a noisy and smelly generator.
Towing capabilities due to moving from diesel to petrol have not been affected, it is actually the most torquiest version of the Ranger available, even more so then the diesel. Max towing weight is 3,500kg.
First deliveries to customers will start in spring 2025 and no prices have been revealed at this stage.
Our Take
The need for a fully electric pickup truck in the UK that isn't the Maxus T90EV is great. Ford make the F-150 Lightning in the US, a Ranger EV should be easily doable. However, while PHEVs are not perfect - this one does at least offer some benefits, such as Pro Power.
