Older Mazda 2 removed from sale, Yaris hybrid based model remains

Mazda has called it time on its own version of the Mazda 2 in the UK. For quite a while now, the company has sold two versions of the Mazda 2. This consisted of its own combustion and mild-hybrid variant and then a not so subtle rebadged version of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid. The difference in design between the two models has been odd to say the least, but Mazda clearly saw a need to sell both at the same time.

However, that has now come to an end. After being released almost ten years ago, the Mazda 2 has been dropped from sale in the UK and the Yaris based car will be the only one available.

The UK currently has the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate in place, and this is likely, along with the age of the model - the main reasoning behind removing the car from sale. For example, the pure petrol version of the Mazda 2 emits 109g/km, whereas the full hybrid version only puts out 87g/km. This, combined with the amount of cars of each the company sold, would have meant Mazda could sell more pure ICE models, like the MX-5.

Mazda only has one EV on sale in the UK, the MX-30 which isn't exactly mainstream, due to its very limited range. Mazda will be launching the all new 6e in 2026.
