Toyota will make an EV Yaris, but claims now is 'not the right moment'

Toyota has been very slow with electric cars so far. Despite just announcing new electric SUVs in the last few days, the company still only has the one on sale, the bZ4X. The company has been very behind on getting going with EVs, with various distractions like hydrogen along the way.

While its new EVs look interesting and finally have some up to date specs, it isn't all good news. The best selling car that Toyota has in the UK is the Yaris and its the second best seller for the brand in Europe. However, despite the fact that the Yaris sells well, Toyota states that now is 'not the right moment' for an all electric Yaris.

When speaking to Autocar recently, Toyota Europe product and marketing boss Andrea Carlucci said:

“This is the idea, but now it is not something we talk about. We have deliberately decided to start [our electric car sales] in the fastest-growing segments. The right moment will arrive, but this is not quite now.”

Despite smaller cars being more affordable and a quickly growing market for electric vehicles at the moment, Toyota won't be launching an EV Yaris just yet. Cars like the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster are generating hype and come in a lot cheaper than existing EVs.

However, Toyota hasn't ruled out an EV Yaris. The car is being planned, but likely won't arrive until the end of the decade. However, for now the company has the new C-HR+, updated bZ4X and the Urban Cruiser which are due to arrive later this year.
