Volkswagen has confirmed that it is working on a new version of the California camper, which will use the new Multivan as a base. The new Multivan is actually based on the MQB platform used for most of Volkswagen’s car range, but has been adapted here for a van, with hybrid powertrain offerings.

This week, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Carsten Intra announced that the new upcoming ‘Multivan California’ will replace the current Volkswagen California 6.1. The current model is based on the Transporter, itself about to be discontinued in favour of the new ID.Buzz Cargo. In fact, the only Transporter 6.1 models still on sale in the UK, costs £60,398.

What details we have about the new California are pretty scarce. For example, the Multivan can be had as a plug-in hybrid, so if kept the same the new model would be the only camper on sale offered as such.

As for dreams of an all electric California… well it’ll be coming but not for a while. The current ID.Buzz doesn’t have the wheelbase to handle a camper, so once the longer version of that comes out later this year, we can expect to see an ID Buzz California in 2025.

As for the Multivan California’, more details will come this year, with a launch in 2024.
